Tree hydraulics: how sap rises

چکیده

Trees transport water from roots to crown—a height that can exceed 100 m. The physics of tree hydraulics can be conveyed with simple fluid dynamics based upon the Hagen–Poiseuille equation and Murray’s law. Here the conduit structure is modelled as conical pipes and as branching pipes. The force required to lift sap is generated mostly by transpiration or capillary action; we investigate the effectiveness of both these forces for the two conduit architectures considered. The level of analysis is appropriate for undergraduates. The subject is of broad interest because it provides a naturallyoccurring example of an unusual metastable state of matter: liquid under tension.

Influence of environmental factors on the sap flux density of mango trees under rain-fed cropping systems in West Africa

Xylem sap flux density (Fd) was measured, on a 43-year-old (mature) and three 4-year-old (young) mango (Mangifera indica L.) trees, using Granier-type probes. The relative influences of environmental variables were examined under well-watered condition. Circumferential variation in Fd was also investigated by placing sensors on the north, south-west and south-east sides of the mature tree. Sap ...

A state-space modeling approach to estimating canopy conductance and associated uncertainties from sap flux density data.

Uncertainties in ecophysiological responses to environment, such as the impact of atmospheric and soil moisture conditions on plant water regulation, limit our ability to estimate key inputs for ecosystem models. Advanced statistical frameworks provide coherent methodologies for relating observed data, such as stem sap flux density, to unobserved processes, such as canopy conductance and transp...

Understanding stomatal conductance responses to long-term environmental changes: a Bayesian framework that combines patterns and processes.

When stomata are open, the trade-off between water loss through transpiration and CO2 uptake via photosynthesis is a result of the evolutionary history of land plants from green algae. To supply the up to 1000-fold higher flux of water leaving the leaf compared with CO2 molecules entering the leaf during leaf gas exchange (Nobel 2009), plant hydraulics has evolved to be highly efficient. The in...

Water use pattern and canopy processes of cashew trees during a drying period in West Africagoo

Water flux in a young, 4-year old, cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) plantation was studied over a dry season, from November 2001 to March 2002, in the forest-savannah transition zone of Ghana, West Africa. The temperature-difference method was used over this five-month period to quantify the diurnal and day-to-day whole-tree sap flow (Qt) and hence the canopy scale transpiration (Ec). M...

Sap fow through petioles and petiolules reveals leaf-level responses to light and vapor pressure defcit in the tropical tree Tabebuia rosea (Bignoniaceae)

Continuous measurements of sap fow have been widely used to measure water fux through tree stems and branches. However, these measurements lack the resolution necessary for determining fne-scale, leaf-level responses to environmental variables. We used the heat ratio method to measure sap fow rates through leaf petioles and leafet petiolules of saplings of the tropical tree Tabebuia rosea (Bign...
